Chapel Attendance Requirements

Chapel Attendance Benchmarks for Class Registration

Because class registration for the next semester begins in the latter half of the current semester, students must accrue a quota of Chapel attendance credits to avoid a HOLD being placed on their account for class registration.  It is wise to attend as many Chapels as possible during the beginning of the semester to avoid the possibility of falling short of the Chapel attendance requirement.  A good goal is to plan on attending 2 Chapels per week for the entirety of the semester.  (As a reminder 3 Chapel services are offered per week: Mondays at 8pm, Wednesdays at 9:30am, and Fridays at 9:30am.)

The following deadlines apply for Chapel attendance over the course of Jessup’s 16 week semester:

  1. Students must attend at least 12 Chapels by the end of week 10 of the semester to avoid having a HOLD placed on their student account.
  2. Students will not be eligible to register for classes for the next semester until the HOLD is lifted from their account.
  3. Students must attend at least 20 Chapels by the end of week 15 of the semester as no Chapel services are offered during week 16 which is finals week.
  4. Students who do not complete the 20 Chapel requirement by the end of week 16 (finals week) will be dropped from their classes and may not register until their Chapel requirement is fulfilled.  (For questions about this process e-mail cmpetitions@jessup.edu for instructions on how to have a class registration HOLD lifted due to Chapel attendance non-compliance.)

While these benchmarks may seem arbitrary, they are necessary to ensure that students stay on track to fulfill their Chapel attendance requirement each semester and to avoid any inconvenient class registration HOLDS due to poor planning.  We encourage all students to schedule their Chapel attendance proactively to ensure that they do not fall behind as the pressures of each semester compound near the end of the term.

Alternate Chapel Petitions

Students who foresee that attending 20 Chapels in the course of a semester may be impossible due to life/work obligations may file an Alternate Chapel Petition at the beginning of each semester.  These forms are due the end of the second week of school on Friday by 5pm.  After this date, students must email chapel@jessup.edu to request access to the Alternate Chapel Petition. Forms submitted after the deadline will be accepted up to halfway up through the semester for a $25 late fee.

To qualify for an Alternate Chapel Agreement, students must meet one or more of the following requirements:

  1. Serve as a primary caretaker of minors (parents and legal guardians only),
  2. Commute more than 10 miles and do not have class within an hour of chapel,
  3. Commute and work more than 30 hours a week,
  4. Face severe health challenges that limit their ability to engage in Chapel,
  5. Participate in a degree required internship that conflicts with the Chapel schedule.

Petitions may only be submitted for the circumstances listed as options on the form.  If approved, students may be eligible to complete up to 8 chapels virtually by watching chapel videos from the current semester on their own time and writing a 2-page reflection paper for each.

Approved petitions are valid only for the term in which it was requested. A new petition must be submitted for each semester.

Chapel Attendance for Graduating Seniors

We encourage all students, especially graduating seniors, to make Chapel attendance a priority as they finish their journey at Jessup.  We hope to see all students engage in Chapel until the very end of their time at Jessup as it is a vital part of our spiritual formation investment in their life, especially as they launch out from Jessup to thrive as a transformational leader for Christ in the world.

Should a graduating senior fall short of his or her necessary units to graduate, that individual will encounter enrollment obstacles if they have not attended at least 20 Chapels and may be unable to register for future classes.

If a graduating senior has legitimate work, internship, or home responsibilities that may interfere with their ability to attend at least 20 Chapels, they may submit a Last Semester Senior Petition and Campus Ministries staff will consider whether a reduction/exemption of Chapel requirements is appropriate.  Please only submit a Last Semester Senior Petition if you qualify for one of the situations listed on the form.  Attempts to petition out of Chapel for convenience alone will not be approved.

If you have any questions or concerns please contact Campus Ministries at chapel@jessup.edu.

Non-Attainment of Chapel Credit

Because chapel attendance is an enrollment requirement, students who do not attain credit will be unable to register for classes for the following semester (or dropped from classes for the following semester if already registered), subject to judicial action, and must re-register once cleared.

Chapel Shortage Form

Students who do not complete 20 Chapels during the course of the semester can fill out a Chapel Shortage Form in order to meet the Chapel requirement and prevent them from becoming Chapel non-compliant. In order to be eligible for the Chapel Shortage Form, a student must have completed a minimum of 12 Chapels. The form must be filing in the last two weeks of the semester. Upon filing the form, the student will be subject to a $75.00 fee.

If approved, students may be eligible to complete up to 8 chapels virtually by watching Chapel videos from the current semester on their own time and writing a 2-page reflection paper for each. These Chapel reflection papers are due the Friday after finals week. If a student fails to complete their Chapel reflection papers by this deadline, they will be considered Chapel non-compliant and will be subject to the progressive consequences of Chapel non-compliance sanctions.

Chapel Non-Compliance Sanctions

Students will be considered Chapel non-compliant if they attended 11 or less Chapels during the semester or failed to complete their Chapel Shortage Form by the stated deadline. A registration HOLD will be placed on their account and students will be dropped from their classes until sanctions are fulfilled.

  1. Chapel Non-Compliance – Level 1
    1. In a student’s first occurrence of Chapel non-compliance, he/she must:
      1. Sign and complete a Chapel policy acknowledgement and attendance commitment
      2. Pay a $150 Chapel non-compliance fee
      3. Re-register for classes from which they were dropped
  2. Chapel Non-Compliance – Level 2
    1. In a student’s second occurrence of Chapel non-compliance, he/she must:
      1. Sign and complete a Chapel policy acknowledgement and attendance commitment
      2. Pay a $300 Chapel non-compliance fee
      3. Re-register for classes from which they were dropped
  3. Chapel Non-Compliance – Level 3
    1. In a student’s third occurrence of Chapel non-compliance, he/she must:
      1. Sign and complete a Chapel policy acknowledgement and attendance commitment
      2. Pay a $500 Chapel non-compliance fee
      3. Re-register for classes from which he or she was dropped
      4. Appear before a judicial committee to determine whether it will be permitted for the Student to return to Jessup or whether they will be suspended for one semester

Once the Chapel non-compliance fee has been assessed and the contract of acknowledgement has been signed and submitted, students will have the HOLD removed from their account and will be able to re-register for classes.
