Policy Approval Process

3 types of Policy

  1. Board Policy – includes executive guidelines for the President and broad institutional policies.
  2. Administrative Policy – provides direction for the development and monitoring of operational policies by the Cabinet.
  3. Educational Policy – provides direction for the comprehensive educational curriculum and its content and quality.

Process for Board Policy Creation, Approval, and Documentation

  1. Request or need for policy identified in board committees
  2. Committee Chair brings policy to board for approval in the form of a motion.
  3. Documented in minutes and posted to policy tree under board policy by President’s Administrative Assistant.

Process for Administrative Policy Creation, Approval, and Documentation

  1. Request or need for policy identified from a variety of sources across the university.
  2. Policy Sponsor assigned based on type of policy.
  3. Policy Sponsor drafts policy and procedure and reviews draft with appropriate stakeholders.
  4. Draft policy reviewed and approved through Policy Sponsor leadership.
  5. Draft policy reviewed by Policy Committee.
  6. Draft policy brought to President’s Cabinet for final review and comment.
  7. Policy proposed to ET by appropriate executive leader.
  8. Policy approved or redirected.
  9. If policy approved, final policy posted to policy tree by policy sponsor.

Process for Educational Policy Creation, Approval, and Documentation

  1. Request or need for policy identified from a variety of sources within the Provost’s area of responsibility.
  2. Policy Sponsor assigned and they draft policy and procedure, then review draft with appropriate stakeholders.
  3. Draft policy reviewed and approved by appropriate department and division leadership.
  4. Draft policy reviewed and approved by Academic or Personnel Council.
  5. Draft policy reviewed and approved by Policy Committee.
  6. If necessary, Policy proposed to ET by Provost or their representative.
  7. Policy approved or redirected.
  8. If necessary, Policy will be forwarded to Board Committee and go through first process.
  9. If policy approved, final policy posted to policy tree by policy sponsor.
