When is Chapel?

Chapel takes place 3 times a week. Monday evenings at 8:00 PM, and Wednesday and Friday mornings at 9:30 AM.

How do I suggest a Chapel speaker?

Chapel speakers are selected by the Campus Ministries Office. You may email chapel@jessup.edu to submit chapel speaker suggestions.

I am upset over what a Chapel speaker said. Whom do I talk to?

We do our absolute best to choose speakers who we feel align with our Christian mission and who will properly teach, encourage, and challange our students. Each chapel speaker signs a statement of agreement affirming Jessup’s doctrinal statement. Occassionally, though, given the nature of the speaking platform, certain things might be said in chapel that cause concern. Each of those concerns should be sent directly to our Campus Pastor at chapel@jessup.edu.

How can I join the Chapel worship band?

Auditions for interested worship leaders, vocalists, and instrumentalists are held each spring semester for the following academic year. Students may apply to audition for the morning Chapel Band at that time. Auditions for the Monday evening Chapel Band take place early in the Fall semester (which means, yes, Freshmen can audition and be part of the team). We will make several announcements in chapel with the specific dates to sign up, so be on the lookout!

I arrived to Chapel at 9:36 a.m., why couldn’t I scan in?

Chapel begins at 9:30 a.m. There is a grace period of 5 minutes for each chapel. Anyone arriving after that allotted time is welcome to attend but will not receive chapel credit.

My Chapel credit was taken away and I didn’t get a warning! Why?

Chapel credit is taken away due to noncompliance of chapel etiquette. Unfortunately, warnings are not required. All students are expected to be aware of chapel etiquette and act accordingly.

I attended Chapel, but I do not see it credited in my Student Portal. What do I do?

It may take up to 24 hours for the credit to be updated in your Student Portal. If 24 hours have passed, you need to email chapel@jessup.edu and request for your credit to be updated. In your email you will need to include the following:

  1. Your Name
  2. Your Student ID Number
  3. Chapel Date
  4. Chapel Speaker
  5. 2 sentence summary of the Chapel message

Chapel credit will not be updated more than 2 weeks past the missing Chapel credit date in question.

When can I submit a Chapel Petition?

Chapel petitions open the week before classes start each semester and remain open for the first two weeks of the semester. After the first two weeks of the semester, a Chapel petition may be submitted late for a $25 charge. Chapel petitions may not be submitted after the halfway point of the semester.

How long is my petition valid for?

Approved Chapel petitions are valid for one semester only. A new petition needs to be submitted for each future semester the student might need one.

I submitted my petition already. When will I hear back?

We do our best to respond to all Chapel petition requests within one week of the date of submission. During peak processing season (the first two weeks of school), it may take up to two weeks to receive a response. It is the student’s responsibility to follow up regarding the status of their petition if they do not receive a response.

I turned in the online part of my petition, but I still need to submit additional documentation. How long do I have to turn that in?

If you are required to turn in additional documentation, you have 30 days from the date your petition was received by the Campus Ministries Office. If you do not submit your required documentation by this deadline, your petition will expire.

I got a job after the petition deadline dates have passed. What can I do?

If a student starts a new job midway through the semester and needs a petition, they will need to submit a work letter on company letterhead within two weeks of the date of hire. The work letter must include the start date and the student’s work schedule. This would allow for the student to submit a late petition for no charge.

Should I go to Chapel while my petition is being processed?

Ultimately, chapel attendance is each student’s responsibility. If approved, your petition may require you to attend a few Chapels in person. We recommend that you attend whenever you are able so that you don’t find yourself behind schedule later in the semester. If your petition is denied, you will be responsible for attending the full 20 Chapels and having attended earlier in the semester will help you to reach your requirement.

How many Chapels do I need to attend?

All full-time (12+ units) traditional undergraduate students are required to attend 20 Chapels each semester.

I have a conflict with the Chapel times. Is there a way I can make up some of my Chapels online?

If you cannot attend 20 Chapels in person, we recommend completing a Chapel petition which would allow you to complete a portion of your requirement online. Please read through the FAQ below to learn more.

Do I have to go to Chapel if I am a part-time student?

If you have 11 units or less you are considered “part-time” and do not have a chapel requirement. You do not have to attend a certain number of chapels but you are always welcome.

What is the Chapel Hold Benchmark?

At week 10 in each semester, if you have not completed a minimum of 12 chapels, our office will place a hold on your student account. This hold prevents you from registering for courses for the following academic semester. If a hold is placed on your account, you will receive an email on the steps you need to take to have the hold removed.

What happens if I don’t meet my Chapel requirement for a semester?

If you do not meet your Chapel requirement, you will be considered Chapel non-compliant and face Chapel non-compliance sanctions. These sanctions are tier-structured, with consequences dependent upon the student’s level of non-compliance:

  1. Chapel Non-Compliance – Level 1
    1. In a student’s first occurrence of Chapel non-compliance, he/she must:
      1. Sign and complete a Chapel policy acknowledgment and attendance commitment
      2. Pay a $150 Chapel non-compliance fine
  2. Chapel Non-Compliance – Level 2
    1. In a student’s second occurrence of Chapel non-compliance, he/she must:
      1. Sign and complete a Chapel policy acknowledgment and attendance commitment
      2. Pay a $300 Chapel non-compliance fine
  3. Chapel Non-Compliance – Level 3
    1. In a student’s third occurrence of Chapel non-compliance, he/she must:
      1. Sign and complete a Chapel policy acknowledgment and attendance commitment
      2. Pay a $500 Chapel non-compliance fine
      3. Appear before a judicial committee to determine whether it will be permitted for the Student to return to Jessup or whether they will be suspended for one semester

I am an older student; do I need to go to chapel?

All full-time undergraduate students must attend chapel regardless of age. Please review criteria for chapel petitions. Nontraditional undergraduate students enrolled in Jessup’s ADC or Graduate programs are not required to attend Chapel.

A close relative passed away and I need to miss chapel to be with my family and attend the funeral services. What can I do?

The death of a family member is considered a reason for chapel waiver. Please email chapel@jessup.edu so that our office is aware of your situation. You will need to provide documentation within two weeks of the date of the absence(s) for the absence(s) to be waived. Accepted forms of documentation would be a memorial card or funeral program.

I’ve gotten really sick and it is causing me to miss Chapel. What should I do?

If you are suffering from a chronic illness, we recommend that you complete a Chapel Petition and document how your condition impacts your ability to attend Chapel. If you are suffering from a short-term illness (infection, hospital stay, etc.), you may email chapel@jessup.edu to request a waiver. You will need to provide documentation within two weeks of the date of the absence(s) for the absence(s) to be waived. Accepted forms of documentation would be a note from your doctor requiring you to miss class/work/etc.

I missed Chapel because I am on a WJU sports team. Why haven’t my Chapels been waived yet?

These types of waivers must be submitted to the Campus Ministries Office by the coach. It is the student’s responsibility to follow up with his or her coach regarding any delays.
